Exploitation, Coercion and Radicalisation

What is Exploitation?

“Where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, control, manipulate or deceive.  Types of exploitation include modern slavery, human trafficking, child exploitation and sexual exploitation.”

What is Coercion?

“A type of domestic abuse.  The abuser uses violence, threats, puts them down or scares and frightens the victim. They do this to so they can control the victim and make them do things they don’t want to.  This behaviour often happens with other abusive behaviours, including physical, sexual and financial abuse.”

Controlling or coercive behaviour is: 

  • acts designed to make a person feel inferior and/or dependent by keeping them apart from friends, help and support.   It can include taking advantage of their money and things they have, stopping their independence, and controlling what they want to do.  
  • an act of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish or frighten the victim. 

What is Radicalisation?

“Radicalisation can happen when a person develops extreme views or beliefs that support terrorist groups or activities.  There are different types of terrorism.  The most common types of terrorism in the UK are Extreme Right-Wing terrorism and Islamist terrorism.   Terrorism is an action or threat designed to influence the government or intimidate the public. Its purpose is to advance a political, religious or ideological cause.”

What Support is Available?

Call 999 if you’re reporting a crime that’s in progress or if someone is in immediate danger.

If you are on a university campus and in an emergency situation, after calling 999 you may wish to contact the University Security team (emergencies: 0161 295 3333) for additional support and to help the emergency services reach you quickly. 

If the crime isn’t an emergency, call the police on 101 or visit your local police station.

Support is available at the university for yourself or someone you are worried about via Report it.
